Local Buses stop in the area of NJIT and Rutgers Universities where there are all kinds of fast food.
If you want more sophisticated food, the last Light Rail stop (only 8 minutes) takes you to the Ironbound area where

Of course, you can also take the PATH to New York City from Penn Station, it is only a 35 minute ride. It also stops in Jersey City and Hoboken.
NJ Transit trains to NY are only a 5 minute drive away in Bloomfield.
NJ Transit costs more than the Path into NYC but will get you there in about 25 minutes vs 1 hour by Path (total combined time).
Montclair is very close by bus or car and is a very nice place to walk and enjoy and eat during the day or at night.
Buses go directly from this area to the airport, NJIT, Rutgers, Essex County College, and Newark Penn Station (approx. 20 min.)
