This is just a stellar bass which plays and sounds awesome! People paying 3+k for old Gretsch's, Gibsons EB2's etc….this bass would eat those for breakfast. Better playability and feel…and tone is KILLER with a TON more versatility. For thumpyness…you won't find better when combined with a set of LaBella DTF's. From what has been shared with me, Dave Roe literally designed this bass to cover the deficiencies of other hollow bodies. It smartly has a forearm cutaway for additional comfort.
This is a one of a kind bass. There will not be another.
Asking $1650 obo - local pickup only. I’d also consider a trade for the right gravel bike (carbon, 54-56cm, etc.) plus/minus cash as appropriate.
I’m open to a trade (cash +/- as appropriate) for a US or Japan Fender precision or a Mesa/Boogie subway 1x15 cab. Have something interesting? Let me know!
This Fret King Dave Roe signature bass is a bass that unfortunately never ended up in production, thanks to the pandemic. I was told that this prototype was crafted in the USA but I don't have any paperwork that confirms it as it was a prototype. This bass is made with a Maple top on a Mahogany body, a Mahogany neck, and a Rosewood fingerboard. It has a 1.65" nut width, a 30" scale length, and it weighs 7 pounds 14 ounces with the Hipshots (add 6 ounces for the original tuners). It features a 16" radius and a C shaped neck for a really fun playing feel. It's strung with Labella white Tapewound strings, and it's a joy to play.
The controls are clever: Neck volume, Bridge volume, Neck second coil blend, Bridge second coil blend, and a master tone. It comes currently with Labella tapewounds and with a pack of Dunlop strings and a Vintage brand gig bag which is in excellent condition. I swapped in a set of Hipshot tuners and the originals will also be included.
This bass is in excellent condition. It plays great and there's very little play wear to be seen. There are no cracks or splits, and the frets are in excellent condition. There is a crack on the pickup cover for the neck pickup, and a scratch near the control cavity cover…that's about it.
This bass came from the estate of the late Dave Roe, who sadly passed away September 2023. He played with huge acts like Johnny Cash, Dan Auerbach, Dwight Yoakam, Carrie Underwood, CeeLo Green, Brian Setzer, Sturgill Simpson, and many others. There's no telling how many sessions, rehearsals, or shows this bass has been played on!
I bought it from the purchaser who bought it from Dave Roe's estate.
I have linked a video I created of me playing it.
Please note that the video is a down and dirty one-take with no processing straight into my IPhone, via my MesaBoogie TT800 into my Barefaced Big Twin II without any effects, etc.

I have noticed that sometimes when I try to respond to craigslist correspondence and inquiries, it seems to go into the ether. If you reach out and it doesn’t appear I’ve responded, please check your spam or also reach out to me on talkbass.com where my username is “TheLarch”. Another option is to text me at (the number rhymes with) "vine dun heaven - nix live live - heaven gore line heaven". Hopefully that discourages data scrapers but still allows you to contact me.
