Howdy Doody was an American children's television program (with circus & Western frontier themes) that was telecast on the NBC network from December 27, 1947, until September 24, 1960. It was the first children's television program to be aired nationally and set the pattern for many similar shows. Howdy Doody himself was a freckle-faced boy marionette with 48 freckles, one for each state of the union at the time of his creation. In the 1970's, the "New Howdy Doody Show" was produced in an attempt by most of the original cast to recreate their past fame.
