Vintage 5-gallon crock & lid
Beautiful brown and cream salt-glazed #5 crock pot and lid.
For something this old it is in pretty good condition. The Crock (without the lid) measures 13” tall x 11 ¾” wide.
Most crocks you find have cracks…this crock has no cracks but does have some chips which are on the bottom edge so they are less visible. This crock has a classic color combination, and the #5 in a ‘heart’…I found a few crocks with the ‘heart/#’ but have not found any listing a specific maker of them. And this crock has the side handles which makes it ‘rarer’ and more desirable. And, larger crocks are harder to find and are more valuable.
I could find NO maker’s name/pattern on the bottom of it; according to one site online: ‘If the Crock has a marker’s name and pattern name on the bottom of the pottery, it was made after 1810’. I don’t know if it applies here.
You can find ‘crocks’ for sale but the lids are really hard to find! This lid has no cracks but the usual small chips on it. This lid has a more decorative look to it compared to the flat ones usually found. The lid seems like it might be a size smaller than it should be but I’m not sure; it still ‘seals’ the crock.
Many people get these crocks as decorative pieces; this crock is whole/solid and can be used for its original design for food storage, fermenting vegetables and pickling.
Thanks, John
