Until a century ago, the world literally overlooked one of the most remarkable empires in history: the Hittite. The Hittites were an Anatolian people who played an important role in establishing an empire centered on Hattusa in north-central Anatolia around 1(contact info removed) BCE. It flourished for five centuries and reached its peak in the 14th century BC. The power of this empire was so great that it plundered Babylon and could face the mighty Egypt as an equal opponent. However, for reasons that are still unknown, the power of the Hittites eventually disappeared. Evidence of their rule remained unnoticed until 1879. Back then, scientists made the first discoveries.
