THE MDA STORY

"There are no incurable diseases," Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, the world-renowned heart surgeon and MDA Vice President has said. "There are only diseases for which no treatment has yet been developed."

As late as 1950, very little was being done to combat neuromuscular disease. In that year, a small group of parents whose youngsters had muscular dystrophy decided to do something about this, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association was born.

Energized by its indefatigable National Chairman, Jerry Lewis, who has been MDA's number one volunteer for more than four decades, MDA today is one of the world's leading voluntary health agencies fostering research and medical care.

But in the beginning, there was only the determination and faith of MDA's founders. Muscle disease was an enemy then largely unknown even to physicians. The major muscle disorders had been named and classified, and their symptoms reported -- but virtually nothing was being done either to establish the causes of these supposedly incurable disorders or to develop effective methods of treatment and cure.

The members of the infant MDA set out to change this picture -- by raising money to support research, to provide medical care, and to bring this national problem to public attention.

Public response to the new organization was immediate. Within a year of its founding, MDA was backed by five affiliated chapters -- a roster that has grown to include over 160 chapters nationwide including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

MDA's authorized nationwide services program, covering over 40 muscle disorders, provides comprehensive diagnostic examinations; follow-up medical management; counseling; assistance with the purchase and repair of wheelchairs or leg braces; physical and respiratory therapy; support groups; and a summer camp program for youngsters age 6-21. The MDA camp program, a pioneer one-site undertaking in 1955, has grown to some 90 camping sessions in over 42 states and Puerto Rico.

MDA has also established a nationwide network of over 225 hospital-affiliated clinics. These facilities provide a wide range of medical and counseling services.

In addition to its vital services program, MDA sponsors programs of professional and public health education and training to foster greater awareness of and concern with the problems of muscle disease.

Public support of MDA has been forthcoming in generous measure -- thanks to a volunteer army of more than two million men, women and children. Spearheaded by MDA's annual Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon, fund-raising campaigns have been organized on both the local and national levels that have made possible not only the wide range of services offered by MDA, but also an extensive program of research on muscle disease. More than 400 research teams throughout the United States and abroad are supported by MDA.

MDA is the world's leading voluntary agency in genetic research and has brought about significant breakthroughs in many research areas.

There is realistic hope today for treatments for muscle diseases, and practical help is available in generous measure for the tens of thousands affected by them. The fight that MDA is waging will be continued until it is won!

HELP TEACH ADULTS TO READ (Morris, Sussex, Warren)

RSVP, the volunteer resource center, has put out a call in search for senior volunteers, 55 years or older to tutor adults for the Literacy Volunteers of Sussex County (LVSC) and also a related office in Morris County. Training is presently being offered for new volunteer tutors to provide tutoring for adults, in English and related skills.

Potential volunteers are asked to attend orientation training sessions which, depending on your County location, are being held during September and October.

Sussex or Northern Warren County volunteers can attend courses as follows:

The Sussex training course will be at Sparta Methodist Church, on Wednesdays 6:30-9:30 PM, September 10 through October 22.

For those who would prefer daytime training instead, and for northern Warren County volunteers there will be a course on Tuesday mornings, 9:30 AM -12:30 PM, at the First Presbyterian Church in Hackettstown, September 9 through October 21.

Potential volunteers from Sussex or Northern Warren may attend either course.

The first session (9/10, 9/9) of each course is an orientation to tutoring. This is invaluable, providing a thorough picture of the tutoring process. That background information helps in deciding whether to become a tutor. Attendance at that orientation does not commit one to tutoring.

Morris County volunteers can attend courses as follows, and are only open to residents of that County. Attendance for the tutor training course differs from those above:

Classes are held on October 4 and 11th in Morristown. Each of these two classes requires attendance from 9AM to 3:30PM.

Pre-Registration is mandatory for all courses.

The tutoring is offered free and is confidential. The adult student may be either American-born or foreign-born. The tutoring is always customized to the student�s level of knowledge and current objectives. This process, invaluable to the student, is also gratifying to the tutor volunteer who is playing a crucial role in improving someone�s life.

"Have fun while you learn" - educational project for orphaned and street children in Bangalore

"Have fun while you learn", is the concept of this unique project developed exclusively for orphaned and street children.
The volunteers will be teaching English & Special Education in a self-chosen fashion to the local children at a primary as well as at center premises during & after school activities.
Entertainment with Education is the method of the project. The volunteers will be taking the children out on a one-day picnic every day in an effort to bring some entertainment into their lives. Apart from just play and fun, the children will also be visiting places of various vocational centers like bio-farms, parks, nature clubs, museums etc, so that the children can form ideas in their young minds which would later evolve as they grow up to what careers they can take up in their lives. This will also bring consciousness about the environment and the planet they are living at.

Developing lesson plans and ideas in the group and passing this information through for future volunteers is part of the plan to create follow-up and long-term improvements in an educational model created with the help of hundreds of volunteers.

Special requirements: You have to love children, as you will be surrounded with loads of them every day.

Volunteer project:The international volunteer project aims to improve the quality of life of Peruan children, teenagers and women. The project works in rural areas and rural communities, developing a set of strategies and actions to reduce the indexes of exclusion and to help in the solution of family problems such as violence against children and lack of education. It is a program that works on many levels from theoretical to practical activities. One of the places where this program works is the orphanage URPI at the City of Ayacucho, Peru.
In the frame of the project a group of international volunteers is invited again to participate in activities with children and Peruan families.

Volunteers will develop many activities, depending on their skills and experiences, their interests, their specialties, but in general, the activities include:
- Organization: To work with kids in the zone where they develop their work. To develop an education program to help youth.
- Training: To develop workshops with the kids. To impulse the workshops training.
- Pedagogic Area: Workshops with families. To implement workshops like handicraft, bakery, etc� Music, dance, and paint workshops.
Volunteers will work every day with around 80 children of Ayacucho

Accommodation: Volunteers will stay in a house in the city.

Location: Ayacucho is a historical city of Peru, located in the mountains at 2700 meters above sea level. It has all the services of the modern city.

Camp language: The official language of the workcamp is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.

Our mission for our foundation is bicyle safety. The NJWFA works to hold New Jersey�s politicians accountable to the needs of New Jersey�s working families by organizing at the grassroots, mobilizing voters and promoting responsible public policy. We combine a practical electoral strategy with an unapologetic focus on issues of economic justice, democratic political reform, environmental protection, and investment in education, children and community. Basically, we think that we can do much more to make New Jersey a decent and humane place to live and work.

NJWFA interns learn how to:
� Develop strategic electoral and issue campaigns
� Mobilize voters for local progressive candidates
� Plan and implement press events and community meetings
� Help conduct grassroots mobilization efforts including tabling, canvassing and phone banking
� Recruit members and volunteers

Burn advocates is looking for a part-time online research assistant who is able to keep track of and report on medical and rehabilitative news and advancements in the burn injury community. Research assistant would actively research opportunities and social events in which burn advocates network would benefit from participating and monitor events in the burn community. Researcher must have good communication skills, be flexible as research will be assigned on an as-needed basis. Must be a good writer, an independent and organized worker, and have good time management skills. We are looking to make our website an online reference where survivors can find resources and connect with other survivors. We would like our researcher to add to our growing database of information and make it accessible to the public. Although the position is unpaid, it pays extensively in references and work experience and the benefit of making a difference in the lives of burn survivors is extremely rewarding.

Hello, I was wondering if someone would be willing to help me with groceries for next month. I could meet you at the store and buy some stuff so you can know that I am for real. I am having a hard time financially and need help. I am unable to get to food banks in my area and I need other things like toilet tissue and womens products that they don't give you. Please help if you can thanks.

Burn Advocates Network is in search of a publicist to draft and circulate press releases, travel to burn camps to write stories, cover events, and develop press contacts. Publicist must be articulate and engaging and must have a strong background in writing and communications. The position pays extensively in references and work experience and the benefit of making a difference in the lives of burn survivors is extremely rewarding. All expenses are paid. Prior experience in public relations is encouraged as Burn Advocates Network is looking to expand its range of media contacts and affiliates. Burn Advocates Network is in search of a volunteer with graphic designing skills to help design posters, mailers, brochures, business cards and letterhead. These materials are needed to help publicize our Sgt. Merlin German Burn Camp Tour, our Veterans Burn Camp Project, our Burned Veterans Rallies, and our fundraising campaigns. The position would require basic design, layout, and graphic design skills. We already have great logos, basic letterhead, and preliminary brochures and promotional materials. As we are a nonprofit organization and operate on a volunteer basis, the opportunity is unpaid. However, the position pays extensively in references and work experience and the benefit of making a difference in the lives of these burn survivors is extremely rewarding.
