Guitar/Vocal/Pro Tools & Logic Pro lessons. Free Trial lesson (Chatham)
I also teach vocals which can vary from rock to pop to metal. The core of what I teach vocally is not genre-specific and can be applied to any style.
My method varies depending on the student, as we all know that everyone has different tastes. I wouldn't force a student to learn sweep arpeggios if their interests lie in writing 3-chord songs. I would, however, break down exactly what they are playing and show them the theory behind it after establishing a solid comprehension of the basics.
I am able to give private in home lessons in Montclair and surrounding areas to students of all ages and playing levels
If you are a beginner and have just picked up your guitar, I like to start by building a solid foundation based on the basics so we have a great place to build from and work on your strengths as well as what interests you the most about playing guitar.
BASICS INCLUDE: Open, barre and power chords, tuning your guitar by ear as well as learning to use a chromatic tuner, proper picking technique (the proper way to actually hold the plectrum) strumming and arpeggiating chords, as well as picking and finger exercises to build up callouses and dexterity so that we can progress to more challenging chords and fingerings, hammer on's, pull offs and bends, and of course the ability to read guitar tablature.
From there, we can move to areas such as basic chord progressions ( I, IV, V), scales (Major, Minor, pentatonic, blues pentatonic) and basic music theory (Intervals, key signatures, circle of fifths etc). Understanding diatonic harmony (how chords are created from scales and the relationship between the two. Triads anyone? hmmmm?) and the difference of relative major and minor just to name a few.
After we have a solid grasp on the fundamentals, we can expand to more advanced topics such as 7th chords, modes, and the more exotic scales depending on your interest level (Japanese pentatonic, Harmonic Minor, Melodic Minor, etc) and it should go without saying that we'll be learning your favorite songs as well!
Other subjects and techniques include, but are not limited to: speed picking, sweep picking and legato soloing, pinch harmonics, palm muting, heavy rhythm playing, modes, playing with feel, vibrato and understanding the business of music. If you are a musician that is looking to develop your songwriting skills, I can help you work through areas like song form and arrangement, melody and harmony, subject matter, lyric writing and proscity (if you don't know what that means, you'll have to come see me :) ) the usage of dynamics in your music, incorporating expressive playing into your song, the understanding of consonance vs dissonance and how they are used effectively to build tension and release in a song and much much more.
My lessons regarding recording in Pro Tools and Logic Pro 9 are centered around the musicians and songwriters who are interested in recording their own music but are new to the software. I work to give them a solid understanding of setting up sessions, proper gain staging, tracking, work flow, editing and how to get the most out of your tracks when it's time to mix to have a great sounding song at the end. The goal is to have you as a songwriter/musician/artist to have the skills necessary to handle all that's necessary from whether it's just making your own demos, to mixing and mastering your own CD. I'll teach you what you can do if you have a band's worth of ideas to record but no band. In other words, I'll teach you how you can be a one man band.
As an instructor, I make great efforts to keep the student engaged throughout the lesson. I suppose students would say that I'm animated as I am outgoing and tend to get excited discussing what I'm the most passionate about. I find it extremely rewarding to see when the light bulb goes off in a student's head and they have there "aha" moment with something we have been discussing regarding music.
Though I try to keep it fun, I do demand their full attention and devotion to the material being covered. My student's progress is of great importance to me and I strive to do everything I can to help them a) understand music and b) succeed with their particular goals they're pursuing within the music world.
