the first $2.00 notes were issued by the federal government
in 1862 and featured a portrait on the face of alexander hamilton, the first secretary of the treasure (1789- 1795). the first use of thomas jefferson"s portrait on $2.00 note was on series 1869 united states notes. since then the same portrait has been used for all series of $2.00 united states notes as well as all $2.00 federal reserve notes. star notes were first issued in 1910. a star has all the security features of other notes. however, it is distinguishable by a star in lieu of a suffix letter at the end of its serial number. the bereau of engraving and printing produced only 3,840,000 of the series 2003 $2.00 star note representing the federal reserve bank of minneapolis. however the other eleven federal reserve banks only printed 16,000 notes.
